Our beautiful bags are hand made in Dharamsala, in the foothills of Northern India by a wonderful team of tailors. Dharamsala is the political and spiritual capital for Tibetan refugees, and home to the Dalai Lama. The Himalayan Tailoring Centre employs over 70 staff many of which are Tibetan refugees and other members of Indian society coming from extremely challenging backgrounds.
Employees of Himalayan Tailoring Centre are provided training to develop skills enabling them to receive a good wage and work in a stable, supportive community environment. The fair trade forum of India certifies the centre, which extends itself beyond the requirements of a tailoring workshop. On visiting the centre the positive atmosphere was inspiring, the workshop overcomes barriers of water shortages, daily electrical blackouts and monsoon rains. We also loved the family atmosphere whereby a free crèche for mothers to use is offered for all staff, parents can visit their children as often as they like during the day.
